The iPhone sync is very data intensive, and short of NOT syncing media files, it's not a realistic solution (with either wifi or the much slower bluetooth). Syncing just emails and calendar would be doable, but then people would get pissed. It's a better business decision to not have it at all. I agree with you, expect on the wireless sync.
