Happy I have no real reason to be excited for the weekend, but I've been really looking forward to it since Wednesday. I think the idea of going home, relaxing, and spending some time with the baby is really appetizing right now. The kid was really good last night, she was sitting on the spare bed while I was fooling around on the computer. The dog got on the bed -- he's great with her, because he really has a huge amount of patience with her. She smacks him, pulls his facial hair, punches him, and he just takes it. The only problem is that sometimes he just tries kissing all over her face and she's clearly annoyed and can't escape him.

Either way, somehow, he laid down and she reached over, so he put his front leg across her legs. She was sitting on her butt playing with his leg - drumming on it, petting it, etc, and he actually closed his eyes and let her just tap away. It was pretty amazing, given that he's rarely that relaxed around Jenn and me and she's so innocently rough with him.

Every time the dog pisses me off - which is often, since the big galoot is usually following us around and thus generally "in the way" - I remember how incredible he is with baby and how great it will be when she's old enough to consider him a friend. I can sense he's going to be fiercely loyal to her and she's going to be really affectionate with him. The seed is already planted.

The entire scene just made me really long to spend some quality time at home with them, maybe let Jenn sleep late and pack up the baby and the dog for a good walk or something.

>> Finally, Something Good! 2007-02-09 10:22:43

Happy I had a bunch of things I wanted to write about - Lists of Bush's impeachable offenses, the ridiculous controversy over Price's "phallic" halftime show, a billboard that reads the "Hoohaa" Monologues, because, apparently, the word "vagina" is now offensive. But instead of yet another rant, I want to share some good news.

Earlier this week in New York City, a somber Trey Anastasio gave an in-depth interview that discussed his music, his plans, his songwriting, his drug use, and even Phish. It's great to hear Trey coming back around and feeling good about music. Trey's new stuff is still great music, but I think we all wonder if he has another "Guyute" in him. We all wonder if, should Phish ever reunite, whether he's more likely to come up with another "You Enjoy Myself" or another "Jennifer Dances." Songs like "Pebbles and Marbles" and "Scents and Subtle Sounds" demonstrate that he and Tom Marshall can still write fantastic, epic music. Songs like Mexican Cousin showed that Trey was interested in writing short numbers with a platform to launch a melodic jam session. But songs like "Undermind," while not bad, per say, were not the same quality, didn't have the same quirkiness, didn't capture the feeling the way some of the older songs, like The Mango Song, or The Squirming Coil, or Silent in the Morning did.

Either way, it's great to see there are still phans out there who are still so connected. This is all good news. In fact, the only bad news is that the comments portion of the page on rollingstone.com has been defaced by a bunch of morons.

Happy Introducing Duke...

It is our distinct pleasure to introduce you to the newest member of our family, Duke. Duke is 10 weeks old, born just three days before our wedding.

duke.jpg

Duke is an F1B Labradoodle puppy - his mother "Angel" is an F1 Labradoodle (bred from a yellow lab and a poodle) and his father is a show poodle, which means Duke's got perfect non-shedding, curly hair and no dander (so Jenn can continue to breathe indoors). He will be coming home with us this Friday. We're very excited.

Happy It looks like I won't be doing any more work on firsttube.com before the wedding. I've got too much to do. In fact, I'm not sure why I'm even posting, I ought to just say "see ya" until I get back. But instead, I'll probably post one or two more times.

It's INSANE how much stuff has to be done last minute. All these pre-wedding meetings and dinners and stuff the family wants me to set up. It's silly, really, but necessary I guess.

Anyway, we're getting really close.

In other news, I bought a Bluetooth mouse for my MBP. It will help me clean up the desk. Also, we bought a new Canon Powershot yesterday to take on the honeymoon. Unlike my old Kodak Easyshare, it mounts in OS X and lets me see the photos before I download them. Plus, it's gorgeous.

>> I really want Picasa on Mac. 2006-02-13 19:59:23

Happy I may be one of a few, but I REALLY want to see a version of Picasa for OS X. Yes, I know there are great image editing programs out there for Mac, and that possibly, many Mac users already have one or more of them installed, however, *I* don't. In fact, I don't even really know how to work with my photos. I suppose iPhoto is a nice program, but I loved Picasa, and found it to be the most user friendly program I'd used in a long time. Other than the fact that it litered those damned picasa.ini files in every damn folder on the disk, it's fantastic. After seeing this article, though, I now have hope.

Happy 1. "Throw off those chains of reason, and your prison disappears."

Love this one! From hemispheres, the perfect ale for any hyper-logical idiot like me is this little quote which reminds us that once is a while, you go with your heart, not your head.

2. "One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless comprimises shatter the illusion of integrity."

Oh man, if people only listened to the lyrics of "The Spirit of Radio" they'd be treated to an amazing story about the hypocrisy of popular music, record companies, and marketing. Emotional feedback on timeless wavelength bearing a gift beyond price. Too fantastic.

3. "You can live in grace and comfort in the world that you transform."

The head says to the heart - DO SOMETHING, you lazy bastard. So few do, you can make a difference with a little effort and a little thought. Great balance to the first quote.

4 "Science, like nature, must also be tamed."

From the epic, and unmatched, Natural Science, this little number is more powerful than you'd think at first glance. We must pursue pure, unadulturated science, but without letting it get the better of us.

5 "Different eyes see different things, different hearts beat on different strings"

A lyric that has really held me since I first heard it many years ago, I loved the notion of perception of the heart. In reality, eyes don't see different things, minds interpret different things. And much the same way, two minds can react to the same emotion different ways. An extremely simple idea, but so well versed.

Happy Forgot about you there for a minute, Mr. Blog. See, the concept of a blog is a funny one, because it acts like a diary, but it's a public diary. But as the livejournal/blogger craze continues, what you find is, well, the diaries are less diaries and more pontificating. Like someone else actually gives a flying shit about your blog.
What could be cool, though, and I'm thinking about this, is something called (something like) "Flip Collaboration." This is where, I guess like Trackback, you can have other people's Flip feeds integrated into your own. Simply plug in their collaboration URL (which is probably simply a link to an RSS feed updated not more than every hour or so) and your Flip feed includes the items in their feed they've chosen to share. Maybe that is trackback.
Hey, don't get me wrong, it's still a useless blog, but at least it's your friends worthless ramblings too.

>> Making the Case, Continued 2003-07-12 23:06:24

Happy Today's Making the Case will focus on the masterful song "Roggae." Roggae's first appearance, few know, was on June 29, 1998, at a rehearsal in Copenhage, Denmark. I know because I was lucky enough to be there. One day before the European tour truly started, those of us that came by early were treated to Phish's rehearsal. The soundcheck included a half-hour-plus instrumental version of Roggae. So, yes, perhaps there is some bias, but nonetheless, I'm including Roggae in my "Making the Case" column.
Roggae is named, we are told, because it is a fusion of Rock and Reggae. While you must strain to hear either rock or reggae, most people confirm that it seems an apt-enough title. What makes Roggae special, though, is not just that it fuses two genres. Roggae is a showcase for all four members as musicians, and one that any music afficionado can appreciate.
Having put their vocal talents on display before, Phish squeeze in one verse in which all four members get a chance to sing. Only a handful of originals feature all four members on vocals, and this one gives each person the spotlight, often literally, rather than harmony en-masse.
Further, Roggae is a slow song, which many a musician knows, is the most accessible form of music. I certainly don't mean to insinuate that Phish's intent was to reach a larger audience, in fact, I'd argue the antithesis, but I believe Roggae to be a song with mass appeal. It's got a very nice structure than non-Phishheads can appreciate.
On top of this, Roggae is built for jamming. While it rarely is stretched to its limits, the ending coda is well suited to be extended as long as the band is having fun. A slow and easy line leaves an easy hook for any of the boys to hop on and have some fun.
Roggae's placement on The Story of the Ghost, though it probably shouldn't be, is also a factor in its greatness. "Sammiched" in between the uppy "Water in the Sky" and the slow "Wading in the Velvet Sea" establish Roggae as a transition song, either slowing it down, or getting ready to speed it up.
I believe Roggae, aside from being a generally good song, is one of Phish's best compositions.

Happy I was sick the last few days, but last night I still went out to help celebrate the completion of the LSATs by my friend K. The night got crazy, the six of us got too drunk too early and were all over Adam's Morgan.
On a plus note, I think I may finally get to wear my tux again. More on that as the time approaches.
